Powered by a 5-1/2 hp Briggs & Stratton engine, this little buckboard rips around the neighborhood at 18 mph. It utilizes a Comet torque converter transmission. For reverse, your left leg is put to use! Accelerates up a 6% grade with a 450 lb payload!
It's simplistic design attracts attention by all who see it. Only a few days after the above photos were shot, the "Red Bug" was in a three carriage parade entry where "First Place" was won in the "Antique/Classic Car Division."
Inspired by the 1920 Briggs & Stratton Cycle Car, the motor wheel was replaced by a chassis-mounted, engine, which drives the right rear wheel through a Comet torque converter and jack-shaft. The wheels are bicycle size (26"), Many "off the shelf" parts are used to keep costs down. Each rear wheel is equipped with external band, drum brake. A hand lever, by way of an equalizer, applies equal stopping power to each rear wheel.
Plans consist of 71 8-1/2 X 11 pages that includes 60 "A" size drawings of every part on the car. Many color photographs explain several sub-assemblies. The text describes the procedures of building and assembly. Includes 3 pages listing where each purchased part can be acquired.
Designer/builder, Everett Moore and driver Brian Moore standby as B. J Spitzke takes a few laps around the parking lot.
Lined up and ready to roll! The "Red Bug" lead a 3 carriage entry in the Cottonwood, AZ Christmas Parade. The 2nd carriage is our Simulated Ford Quadricycle pulling the familiar parade trailer. The 3rd carriage is Ron Shutter's, Curved Dash Oldsmobile replica.
